China Business Visa Guide for Indian Trade Fair Visitors

Understanding China Visa Types

The M visa is what you need for Canton Fair and business visits

China offers several visa categories, but for Indian business owners attending Canton Fair or visiting Chinese factories, you need the M Visa (Commercial/Business Visa). This visa is specifically designed for individuals travelling to China for commercial and trade activities.

Do not confuse the M Visa with the L Visa (Tourist Visa). While both allow entry into China, the L Visa is for tourism and sightseeing only. Attending a trade fair, meeting suppliers, or visiting factories on a tourist visa can cause issues if questioned at immigration. Always apply for the correct visa category.

M Visa (Business)

For trade fairs, supplier meetings, factory visits, and commercial negotiations. This is the correct visa for Canton Fair visitors.

L Visa (Tourist)

For sightseeing and tourism only. Not suitable for business activities, trade fairs, or factory visits.

Important Visa Tips

Common mistakes to avoid and best practices

Apply early — at least 4-6 weeks before your travel date

Processing times can be unpredictable, especially during Canton Fair season when thousands of applications are submitted. Do not leave it to the last week.

Ensure your invitation letter matches your application

The dates, purpose, and personal details on your invitation letter must match what you write on the visa form. Any discrepancy can lead to rejection.

Keep copies of everything

Make photocopies and digital scans of all submitted documents, including your passport, visa form, and invitation letter. You may need them during your trip.

Do not overstay your visa

China takes visa overstays very seriously. Overstaying even by one day can result in fines, detention, and a ban on future entry. Always track your visa validity dates.

Consider a multiple-entry visa if you travel frequently

If you plan to attend both the Spring and Autumn Canton Fair, or make multiple trips, apply for a 6-month or 1-year multiple-entry M visa. It costs more but saves hassle.

Register at the local police station within 24 hours

Chinese law requires foreigners to register at the nearest police station within 24 hours of arrival. Most hotels do this automatically, but if you stay at a private residence, you must register yourself.
